Complementary therapies

“Complementary therapies are used alongside, or in addition to, conventional medical treatments. They do not claim to treat or cure cancer. People use complementary therapies to boost their physical or emotional health. Or to relieve symptoms or side effects of conventional treatments.”(Macmillan Cancer Support)

The Mulberry Centre offers a wide range of complementary therapies, after assessment we may offer clients a number of one-to-one therapy sessions.

All therapies are carried out by qualified and experienced practitioners who adhere to their professional code of conduct and are registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).  Our amazing team of therapists are all volunteers and give their time free of charge.

Meet our Volunteer Therapist

Complementary therapies at the Centre are practised to induce relaxation and the compassionate and reassuring use of touch is central to this, as is the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the client and the practitioner.

Our complementary therapies include

Massage

Massage is both mentally and physically relaxing helping to reduce stress and tension to promote deeper sleep and to ease aches and pains. Massage takes many different forms and our therapists can focus on areas of particular need such as shoulder, neck, back or legs.

Reflexology

Reflexology is based on the principle that the whole body is reflected in miniature on the feet and hands. Using a specific pressure technique on the feet and hands it can bring about a sense of wellbeing and feeling of relaxation. It can be a useful adjunct in the treatment of many health problems.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy uses pre blended or individually selected essential oils. These oils are extracted from flowers, plants, herbs, fruits and seeds each with their own therapeutic properties.  Oils can be used to massage and we can provide individual inhalers (aroma sticks) to take home with you.

Reiki

Reiki is a gentle treatment that is suitable for all as there are no contraindications. The practitioner gently places their hands on or near the body and can work on the whole body or on specific body parts. It allows the body to rebalance which in turn may ease symptoms physically, mentally and emotionally.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is acupressure massage which treats the body and mind. Unlike conventional massage, you remain fully clothed throughout the treatment and by using gentle stretching and pressure techniques along the body’s meridians and acupuncture points, relaxation can be achieved.

Breathwork

We currently run a 6-week online mindful relaxation and breathwork course where you can learn a variety of techniques to help bring calmness, tranquillity, and peace into your everyday life.  Over the weeks you will learn gentle yet powerful relaxation routines you can use as a calming tool during times of stress and anxiety.

Soul Midwife

Offering non-medical, holistic comfort, care and support to anyone facing end of life.  Understanding the emotional, physical and spiritual aspects that might be experienced by someone who is dying we can offer time to listen.  Soul Midwives can also give practical planning advice and support as well as gentle and simple techniques to ease anxieties.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture aims to balance the flow of energy or life force known as chi or qi to treat a range of symptoms. Most clients notice that it promotes relaxation, and results in a feeling of improved wellbeing. An Acupuncture treatment involves very fine needles being inserted through the skin at strategic points of the body which are briefly left in position. This treatment is suitable for all.

Aromasticks

A nasal inhaler impregnated with essential oils with particular properties to bring about a desired effect.  We can make bespoke aroma sticks for individuals to help improve sleep, manage feelings of nausea, bring about calm or with an uplifting effect. Simply twist to open, hold under your nose and take a long deep breath.

EFT

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a type of acupressure; it involves tapping on meridian points on the skin surface.  The tapping is carried out by the client with the guidance of the therapist, repeating phrases of positive reinforcement.  Negative patterns and behaviour can be changed using EFT it can also be used to treat fears, phobias and pain.
